Channapatna is an ancient art of making colourful wooden toys, practised near Bengaluru in Karnataka. The vibrant colours of these popular toys always manages to brighten up dull moods.
But what is the age old technique of making the natural colours that give the Channapatna toys their sheen?
The resin used in making these organic non-toxic colours has an interesting source - Lac insects. Thousands of lac insects colonize host trees and secrete this resin, which is collected and mixed with natural pigments that impart the resin its colour. Lac gives the Channapatna toys the gloss for which they are popular worldwide.
See the complete process of making these colours unfold in this video.
