These were the first keys I ever set for Moana, 4 years ago in December of 2014. We had just finished Big Hero 6 and Frozen Fever, and the supervisors were rolling onto Moana to do the “water test” as we called it, with the intention to show it at D23 the following year (the rest of the crew started animating Zootopia). It was beautifully boarded by Chris Williams and eventually made it into the actual film, even though it started as a look test. My daughter was about the same age as Moana in this shot so I had plenty of clumsy toddler reference at my disposal. I animated the blue water rig (affectionately referred to as Gretchen, because Head of Animation @mrhyrum randomly named it that in a meeting and it stuck) to get the main beats of the performance, and then Dale Mayeda imported that geometry to create the water effects. (Finished shot followed by my first blocking pass).
