HMS Alert was a 10-gun cutter launched at Dover in 1777. It was one of 15 cutters built for the Royal Navy between 1777 and 1778.
A cutter is a small sailing ship, typically with one or two masts and straight sails. They were popular in the 18th century for patrolling, mail delivery, and smuggling suppression.
HMS Alert was equipped with ten 4-pound guns and six to twelve half-pound swivel guns. It was armed enough to deal with any small ships, but not large enough to confront larger vessels.
HMS Alert served in the Royal Navy during the American Revolutionary War. In September 1777, it caught and engaged the 16-gun American brigantine Lexington in the English Channel. The battle lasted for about an hour, and Lexington was eventually forced to surrender.
In June 1778, HMS Alert engaged the French 10-gun lugger Coureur. The battle lasted for about an hour and a half, and Coureur was eventually forced to surrender.
HMS Alert was captured by the French frigate Junon on 17 July 1778. The French renamed it Alerte and used it as a cutter. Alerte served in the French Navy until 1794, when it was captured by the British frigate HMS Antelope.
HMS Alert was returned to the Royal Navy and served until 1803, when it was sold for scrap.
HMS Alert was a successful ship that achieved several victories over enemy ships. It served in the Royal Navy during an important period in American history.
