Drosophila melanogaster has been a powerful model for developmental biologists for over a century. A new paper in Development describes an accessible method to access its tissues at high resolution, using micro-computed tomography (µ-CT). Rapid processing of intact flies, at any developmental stage, provides precise quantitative assessment of tissue size and morphology, and permits analysis of inter-organ relationships.
Some of the paper's movies are compiled above - a striking new look at an old model organism.
