The total recovery time after a heart transplant is 3-6 months. The hospital stay is for 1 or 2 weeks.
Patient may take a shower but no longer than 10 minutes.
Use gentle soap and water to cleanse the incision area.
Patients require a caregiver or helper 24 hours a day for the first few months post-transplant.
Do not drive a car for six to eight weeks after your surgery. Your cardiologist will clear you to drive.
Do not lift anything over 10-20 pounds for six weeks after your surgery.
Most people return to work within 6 months.
Take short naps when required. Don't lie around in bed for long periods during the day. Start with short walks and increase gradually.
Pregnancy: Wait until at least a year after your transplant operation before trying for a baby.
Wear comfortable clothes to help you get back into a regular daily routine.
