Please join students and faculty for a presentation by Alison Trope, USC Annenberg School of Communication professor. Her talk, titled "Stardust Monuments: Hollywood and the Power of Place," is based on her recent book Stardust Monuments: The Saving and Selling of Hollywood.
From professor Trope: "What do Internet sites like Deadline Hollywood, Universal Studios theme parks, Turner Classic Movies and foiled plans for a Hollywood museum have in common? Each creates an experience of Hollywood outside of movie-going, and further asks us to consider what Hollywood means, how its story is being written, and by whom. Nonprofits and for-profits, amateurs and professionals, fans and consumers all have struggled historically to define Hollywood's meaning and narrate its story. While Hollywood refers to a specific geographic and industrial context, its meaning significantly travels beyond these boundaries as efforts to concretize and monumentalize its cultural worth permeate our everyday lives."
