신규확진 711명, 사흘째 700명대…일요일 기준 3차유행후 최다
South Korea reported more than 700 new COVID-19 cases again.
Authorities remain concerned about the spread of the highly transmissible delta variant.
KIM Cheong-ah brings the updates.
South Korea reported 711 more infections on Monday and added two more deaths…raising the death toll to 2-thousand-28.
Although the latest figure is down from the 800s reported on Friday, it has remained in the 700s since then, despite cases usually being lower due to fewer tests over the weekend.
The nation's daily average was up more than 33 percent last week from a week earlier.
The daily case count is at a near six-month high following several clusters in the Seoul metropolitan area… mainly linked to infections at bars, clubs, gyms and schools.
Cases in the greater Seoul area now account for over 80 percent of the total cases in the past six days, with nearly half of the cases occurring in people in their 20s and 30s… the largely active and unvaccinated population.
What's more concerning is that the highly contagious delta variant accounts for about 7 percent of new infections.
The country had planned to allow vaccinated people to take off their masks outdoors but that plan has been scrapped as the number of infections jumped in the capital city. And there are worries that the upcoming summer holidays could lead to a larger spike in cases.
