In 1910, the First Portuguese Republic was established, and they made a new set of rules that were heavily influenced by Freemasonry. They wanted to keep religion out of public life, so they took over Catholic churches and schools, and they even made it illegal for priests to dress in their usual clothes or for church bells to ring.

Public religious festivals were off-limits, too. Between 1911 and 1916, almost 2,000 priests, monks, and nuns were killed by groups who were against Christianity.

Then on October 13, 1917 something incredible happened: the Virgin Mary appeared to three young kids in Fatima and told them she'd give them a sign so others would believe, too. And the sign was amazing! It came to be known as "the miracle of the dancing sun," and even scientists couldn't explain it.
