The Dance of Covert Narcissism and Codependency- Not a relationship Goal!

There is a dance in codependency that involves intimate relationships between codependent and narcissistic types. Lack of self-esteem in both the person with narcissistic traits and the person with codependent traits can cause you to lose yourself in the relationship.

The fact that all people display narcissistic or codependent traits from time to time can make it more difficult for a person to determine if they are narcissistic, codependent, or both. People who are codependent in one situation may be narcissists in another. In some cases, an abuser may try to trick a co-dependent partner into believing they are a narcissist.

Codependent people find a partner to confide in, while narcissistic people find someone who puts their needs first.

Co-dependents or empaths focus on the needs of others and give abusers and narcissists the attention they crave. Codependent empaths have the dual problem of having weak boundaries and detachment from themselves, while also being very sensitive to other people. The type of empathy most often shown in relationships with narcissists tends to be codependent, which may not actually be an empath at all, but rather... a covert narcissist.

The terms codependency and narcissism are based on these two ways of interacting with other people, which are as opposed to each other as possible. Narcissists (people with a narcissistic personality disorder) and co-dependents are usually considered opposites, but surprisingly, although their outward behavior may differ, they share many psychological traits. However, narcissists do not feel genuine emotions or genuine connections in relationships like most people do.
