(19 Jul 2018) Some Arab and Jewish residents of Jerusalem have expressed concern over a contentious Israeli law passed on Thursday that defines the country as the nation-state of the Jewish people.
The government says the bill enshrines Israel's existing character into law but critics warn it sidelines minorities.
Jerusalem resident Inbar Shifrin said she thought the law was "discriminatory, problematic and non-democratic."
A shopper at Jerusalem's market who gave his name as Shalom said "every nation needs its own nationality law while not hampering the nationalities that live in their vicinity."
For Hani, an Arab resident of Jerusalem, the law is "racist."
Israel's 1948 declaration of independence defined its nature as a Jewish and democratic state, a delicate balance the country has grappled to maintain for 70 years.
