Germany wants to attract over 2 lakh skilled workers to address labor shortages. Recently, the government of Germany announced simplifying its immigration process to welcome more immigrants with skills and potential to contribute to the country's economic development. The country's growing labor shortage is an area of concern for the government, further intensified by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Germany's economic and climate minister, Robert Habeck, said in a statement that the country is "on the lookout for people who fancy coming to Germany to bring in their skills, expertise, and passions."
Germany has predicted to have a shortage of about 2 40 000 skilled workers over the next four years. The EU is implementing several measures to ease immigration norms and invite more foreign workers to deal with the labour crisis.
As per the recent announcement, Germany plans to offer dual citizenship and special citizenship status for three to five years to workers who meet specific eligibility requirements.
The shortage of skilled workers is a serious issue in Germany, which is now drastically slowing down the economy. The ageing workforce is another issue that can only be resolved if the country reaches the mark of over 2 40 000 workers from overseas as quickly as possible.
Germany wants to attract both academic and vocational skills from non-EU countries. During the announcement on the 'Make it in Germany' YouTube channel, Habeck confirmed, "We welcome people from all over the world." It depicted that Germany intends to invite skilled professionals working as craftspeople, electrical engineers, IT specialists, caregivers, nurses, catering, and the hospitality sector. Germany also has a massive demand for physicians, scientists, metallurgy workers, and builders.
It is now easier to enter the German job market.
Germany's Labour Minister Hubertus Heil estimates that the labor force will shrink by more than 240,000 workers by 2026 as more old workers are retiring than younger ones entering the labor market. The gap is expected to grow further by 650 000 in 2029. Economy digitalization, low-birth rate, the Covid-19 outbreak, uneven immigration, and the impacts of the Ukraine and Russia war have also disturbed the shape of the labor market.
In November 2021, the government of Germany made a historic announcement by allowing non-EU citizens to have dual nationality. Earlier, it was restricted to only a few individuals under certain conditions.
The move aims to modernize Germany's immigration system and abolish bureaucratic hassles to ensure everyone has equal access to the German labor market.
