The land and people of Navajo Nation have been permanently contaminated.
What happened in Navajo Nation? In the wake of the Nuclear Arms Race with the Soviet Union following World War 2, Navajo Nation became a uranium playground for the United States government in what would become one of the most careless acts the U.S. government has ever partaken in, which would result in several of America's biggest tragedies of the modern age. Some call it bipoc injustice, some call it undesignated apathy, but most everybody will agree that it's a tragedy after watching this documentary. Navajo Nation is a sovereign Native American reservation located in the southwestern United States. Navajos are also known as Diné.
The documentary focuses on two locations in Navajo Nation. The first location is Cameron, Arizona. In Cameron, there are over 100 abandoned uranium mines that are mostly leftover from the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s. The mines have been contaminated the ground and local drinking water for nearly 80 years in some instances, and has now caused generational cancer amongst the local population. The government and private corporations abandoned these mines, and the EPA let them sit open until the 2000s, but by then it was too late.
Our second location, Church Rock, is home to the world's second worst nuclear accident in world history, only behind Chernobyl. The Church Rock Uranium Mill spill resulted in 1100 tons of radioactive waste, and 94 million gallons of radioactive water devastating the town, but also the farms and towns all along the Puerco River, and damages were recorded by the flood over 100 miles away.
