Michigander is the indie rock project of Jason Singer. Naturally, he’s from Michigan, a fact that’s embedded not only in his moniker but also in his Midwestern-nice demeanor. Both on and offstage, Singer exudes positive vibes. Many of his lyrics run the gamut of emotions to be sure, but more often than not even his angstiest sentiments are bolstered by catchy guitar licks and sing-along-ready refrains. Want a blast of dopamine? Check out the video of a blissful Lollapalooza 2021 crowd singing back every word of “Let Down.” Even the gloomily-titled “Misery” - ‘Gander’s most-streamed Spotify song to date - keeps the door open for a consternated lover to taste redemption. Previously based in Detroit and more recently repping a Nashville area code, where he met his wife, Singer exudes a DIY ethos. He got on tour with Manchester Orchestra, as he tells it, because of a cover he did that caught the band’s eye. Adhering to the 2023 Musician Commandments to “always be making content,” he turned a broken leg from a failed Cali forest expedition into the “Superglue” music video. Sure, it delayed a big tour by 6 months but, lemons out of a lemonade seems to be Singer’s vibe. In April, this alt-rock acolyte shaped by Dashboard Confessional and The National released ‘Everything Will Be Ok Eventually.’ Singer calls the EP a “leveling up moment.” Doesn’t take long when you’re watching this “Misery” performance to realize that’s the truth.
