Genesis 26 is the story of Isaac and his family’s journey to Gerar during a famine. God appears to Isaac and promises to bless him and multiply his descendants. Isaac plants crops and is blessed by God with a bountiful harvest.
However, the Philistines become jealous of Isaac’s success and persecute him. Isaac digs wells, but the Philistines fill them in. Isaac moves to another location, but the Philistines harass him there as well.
Finally, Isaac moves to Rehoboth, where God appears to him again and confirms his promises. Isaac builds an altar and worships God. The Philistines make a peace treaty with Isaac, and Isaac settles in Rehoboth.
In verse 4: “I will make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and will give them all these countries, and through your offspring all nations on earth will be blessed, because Abraham obeyed me.”
In verse 24: “That night the LORD appeared to him and said, ‘I am the God of your father Abraham. Do not be afraid, for I am with you; I will bless you and will make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky.’”
