The Palace of the Parliament in Bucharest is one of the largest buildings in the world, and by virtue of the materials used in its construction, the heaviest.

Construction on the Palace of the Parliament was begun by dictator Nicolae Ceausescu in 1984 and not considered finished until 1997, long after his demise (in fact there are still some parts still being completed). Costing over $6 million a year for heat and light, this monstrosity was designed to hold all government departments and ministries. It is now home to the Parliament of Romania, three museums, and an international conference center. A tour of the building is how we usually end our walking tours in Bucharest.
