The PLA Navy has become the world’s largest navy with number of vessels even more than US. China is growing its submarine fleets at speed that we must not underestimate. However, what Chinese lack is the combat experience. Also, when it comes to quality, the Chinese fall short of their boosted claims. Recently, 3 of Chinese "latest" 7000 tonne, Shang class nuclear attack submarine got detected by the UK lead Carrier Strike Group while Beijing was using its technology to locate the positions of UK’s carrier strike group. China has been deploying submarines to reinforce their wider intent to move towards super-power status and dominate trade and security across the Pacific - contrary to international law. The submarines are supposed to be silent killer and their detection questions the quality of their acoustics. The detection of Chinese Nuclear Attack Submarines proves that they are quite noisy and we are not talking of just one submarines but 3 of them. Two of them were detected by the active sonar of ships & 1 by the passive sonar of UK’s Nuclear attack submarine. The Chinese submarines are also equipped with cruise missiles which could be a threat for any aircraft carrier, frigates & destroyers. The Royal Navy had expected activity from Chinese submarines and Beijing’s intelligence gathering spy ships. The two Shang class submarines were located by specialists in the operations rooms of HMS Kent and HMS Richmond as the HMS Queen Elizabeth carrier group left the South China Sea and moved into the Pacific Ocean. A Royal Navy Astute class submarine has identified a third Shang boat as it patrolled ahead of the task force while running silent. If we talk about the submarine’s detection, it is identified by the sound generated from its propellers - a hallmark which is unique to every submarine - which is referenced in a ‘digital library’ of submarine sounds. Or in simple terms, sound from propeller is the finger print of a submarine. China operates nearly 70 submarines, more than the US Navy and the Royal Navy. The PLA Navy operates six new second generation submarines, known as the Type 093 class, which entered service in 2006. These submarines can stay in deep waters for 80 days with the capability to deliver supersonic ship-killing missiles. Beijing projects its Naval power to influence nations across the Pacific. However, the recent detection of its SSNs questions its quality.
