The renal arteries arise directly from the abdominal aorta at the level of intervertebral disc between L1 and L2.
At or near the hilum of the kidney, each renal artery divides into anterior and posterior divisions.
The anterior division passes in front of the renal pelvis and divides into 4 segmental arteries : superior segmental, anterior superior segmental, anterior inferior segmental and inferior segmental.
The posterior division of the renal artery passes behind the renal pelvis and gives of only one segmental artery called the posterior segmental.
