John Wesley’s Sermon #35 Outline: “The Law Established through Faith: Part 1”
Romans 3: 31
1. We are saved by faith, not by the works of the Law (Moral Law)..
2. So is the Law now void?
3. No, the Moral Law (the 10 Commandments) is still in force
4. Many Christians think the whole Mosaic Law was done away with by grace.
5. But if we void the Moral Law, we void faith also. They work together.
6. So how do we uphold the Law today?
I. But First, How do we Christians Void the Law?
1. By not preaching about it at all.
2. It proves that we do not understand the importance of the Law
3. For the Law convicts us of sin. People must be convinced that they are ‘sick’.
4. Why offer Christ to those who don’t need him?
5. The Apostle Paul preached the Law and the Gospel in his first recorded sermon.
6. St. Paul noted: “No one can be justified by the Law, but only by faith in Christ.” Then he severely threatened them with the judgments of God.
7. Paul preached at Lystra, telling people to turn from idols
8. Paul preached repentance and judgment to those in Athens.
9. In fact, Paul preached the Law in every one of his Epistles.
10. The Apostle Paul preached both grace and judgment throughout his ministry.
11. He made it clear that to “preach Christ” is to proclaim both love and threatenings
12. Preaching all Love and no judgment eventually voids both.
II. Secondly, We Void the Law by:
1. Teaching that faith replaces the need of good works.
2. Some think that after faith, holiness is optional.
3. Others suppose being under grace excuses them from obeying the Law at all.
4. While obeying the Law does not save us, good works are a result of our living faith.
5. Clearly, we are saved by faith alone. However, it is the modern day ‘Pharisees’ who push salvation by doing good works so hard, that they frighten many who then abandon good works all together. (We call these people Antinomianists).
6. But faith without works is dead. We need a middle ground from these two extremes.
7. While we agree that those who put their faith in Jesus receive Christ’s righteousness at Justification, good works count for one’s righteousness after Justification.
III. Finally, We Void the Law by:
1. Living as if faith excuses us from holiness
2. It is true that the believer is no longer under the curse of the Law.
3. The believer is under grace and therefore no longer required to obey the Law for salvation. But now, by God’s grace, they willingly obey it and have the power to do so.
4. So I ask you: “Shall we obey God less now than before?”
5. “Shall we sin more, now than before?”
6. “Shall we drop our spiritual guard more than before?”
7. “Is the love motive less powerful than fear?”
8. “Are we less zealous for God, now than before?” O Repent and do the works you did before! Remember from what place you have fallen. Do not allow God to cut you off from Him by neglecting or refusing to obey His good and holy commandments..
