ATTENTION: Be sure to ONLY purchase pine pellets that are NOT treated with chemicals like flame retardants or wood stabilizers! Read the bag - it should say "Safe for Small Animal Use" and "Chemical-Free & Biodegradable" or something similar.
Anyone who has a cat knows how important litter is, and when you're fostering up to 15 cats and kittens, that's a LOT of cat litter! I have found a great, safe alternative to traditional clay and clumping litters that costs under $10 per 40 lb bag...that's a huge saving over regular litter that can run from $10 to $40 for a mere 10- 20 lb box!
Pine pellets are not new to animal care and traditionally were used for horse and livestock bedding. But people have found it makes a great option for cat litter boxes, too. I like it for these reasons:
- It's just compressed pine dust (and untreated with chemicals, but be sure to read the bag before buying to be sure, as brands can vary), so even very small kittens can use it and there's no risk if they ingest it, which is a big danger with clumping litter.
- It has a nice pine smell that helps lessen odors.
- Once the litter has been broken down to sawdust, remove the feces clumps and you can add to your compost pile!
- And it's SO, SO cheap!
You can buy bags of pine pellets at most farm supply stores.
