This is London’s new fully electric bus, designed by Spanish firm Irizar. Will it have enough charge for a whole day?
The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has confirmed that these new fully electric tram buses will start operating in South London in just a few weeks.
The new buses, called ieTrams, will operate on route 358, between Orpington and Crystal Palace. That’s 15 miles of distance, by the way.
The buses feature large windows and covered wheels for the safety of cyclists and pedestrians. They also have sliding doors and low floor for easy access.
But will it have enough battery power to run all day?
Ie Tram is powered by pantograph technology, which means the bus gets a 10-minute battery boost at either end of the route, ensuring it has enough power for a full day of work.
These buses were supposed to be launched in London in early 2023, but the release has been repeatedly delayed, since Transport for London had to install all the necessary hardware for charging.
London isn’t the first city to introduce these buses. Ie trams already operate in Madrid and in the French Basque Country.
The main question now is - when will we get electric double-deckers?
