Risk factors for heart disease are not always the same as those in men. During pregnancy, women can experience hormonal shifts, hypertension, gestational diabetes and other issues that increase cardiovascular risk. Additionally, hormonal imbalances brought on by disease of the reproductive system and certain rheumatologic disease can increase risk for heart disease.
