위안부 문제 '최종해결'은 아직? 정부 일본 정부에 위안부 협의 훼손하지 말 것 촉구
It's been over a month since Korea and Japan agreed on a landmark settlement on the Japanese military's sexual enslavement of Korean women before and during World War II.
It was intended to act as a final closure of the decades-long conflict between the two countries... yet, issues surrounding the deal are showing no signs of easing.
Most recently, tensions reignited after Japan submitted a report to the United Nations... denying its coercion of women into sexual slavery.
Our foreign affairs correspondent Kwon Soa is live in the studio with me.
Soa,... obviously the agreement was not an "once and for all" as we are still talking about it today...
It's really Japan's move over the weekend that has garnered staunch criticism from the Korean government.
Yes, Conn-young.... Seoul's Foreign Ministry urged the Japanese government to hold back on any kind of behavior that could damage the intent of the bilateral agreement reached in December.
Speaking to reporters on Monday, a senior ministry official offered some possible reasons... as to WHY Japan insists it did not coerce women.
The official said... Japan believe women who were forced into sexual servitude were often tricked under the guise of employment by second parties and therefore they hold no responsibility.
Also, the Japanese military likely destroyed documents stating women were coerced into sexual servitude and so there's not proof.
But the ministry says Tokyo's coercion is an undeniable historical fact, which it reconfirmed Sunday, in response to the report that Japan submitted to the U.N. ahead of a committee meeting this month.
"We are urging the Japanese government to refrain from any words and actions that could damage the purpose of the apology and reflection made on behalf of the Japanese prime minister on December 28, last year,... and instead actively show its stance on recovering the honor and dignity of the victims to help heal their scars."
