Notes on All You Need Is Love:
Thank you so much Peter & Natalie, Michael, Alan, Justin,
for making this happen. What an eclectic and awesome group of
artists to lend their voices, spirit, and time to this performance.
And thank you Russell Wiener who not only engineered this
“remotely” but edited the video together in such an artful way.

This is a complete re-record from top to bottom of this
most beloved all time classic.
My engineer Russell and I followed the Beatles
original tempo map, and discovered they accelerated 12 tempo clicks faster
by the end of the song, so we did the same. In other words, they did it by “feel and excitement", the way great records used to be made. Quoth Ringo: I am the bloody click track!
I kept wondering what’s the clacking sound in certain parts… we discovered
via isolated Beatle tracks online that it appears to be someone banging on
the top of a piano with a stick on the upbeats, so I did the same.
Being in quarantine, I had no choice but to play all the instruments, but then,
who would play the Bavarian Beer Hall ‘chuckling’ horn lines ? You
just can’t use synths for that or the cello lines.
Turns out Russell plays sax, so he covered that and his wife Mika
did a wonderful job on the cello parts. You’ll see them making a guest appearance in the video.
Thanks to the remarkable voices and hearts of my dear friends Michael and Alan
and new friends Peter & daughter Natalie, with SB’s favorite Justin,
it all came together beautifully.
Love is still all we need, especially now. Stay safe.
