Yajna practice in Hinduism, offerings to the gods based on rites prescribed in the earliest scriptures of ancient India, the Vedas, in contrast to puja, a later practice that may include image worship and other devotional practices. Yajna performance is ritual and recitation of the necessary mantras or sacred formulas to Agni Deva (fire God) , acting as medium
between man and gods . It is performed in front of a fire and Vedic mantras are chanted . Yajna is a Sanskrit word meaning “worship” “sacrifice “ and “offering”. There are thought to be 1008 types of yagna: The Bhagavat Gita mentions 12. Yagnas are performed at a yaga sala. The four entrances of a yaga sala represent the four Vedas. Ahuti, meaning, "oblation," is offered into the sacred fire. There are 5 types of yajnas in Vedic times: hom, isti, pashu, soma and satrayaga. There were also special yajnas for securing kingdoms or overlordships such as rajasuya, vajapeya, ashvamedha and naramedha.
