Croatia Election: Stage Set for a Political Showdown Between PM & President
Croatian voters are bracing for the parliamentary election on April 17, where Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic's HDZ party is expected to lose its majority due to corruption scandals. The election will pit PM Plenkovic against an alliance of left-wing parties led by President Zoran Milanovic and his Social Democratic Party (SDP). Both HDZ and SDP held their final rallies on Sunday. If a Social Democrat-led coalition takes power, it could alter Croatia's stance on issues like supporting Ukraine in its war with Russia. Unlike most EU states, Milanovic opposes aid for Ukraine. HDZ, in power since Croatia's independence in 1991, oversaw Croatia's EU and eurozone entry and a tourism boom along the Adriatic coast.
