【Pls look at the top comment first】"Calm Before The Storm" is the only album from Canadian aor group Lovering. The title is the same as British legend Dare's third album (1998), which is more well-known by the majority. Here the album by Lovering is also worth trying as a desirable choice. Lovering is an aor project by Brian Lovering, the guitarist and the keyboardist. Generally, Lovering is a duo by Brian Lovering and Doug Martin (vocalist) on the album cover with the studio players in the recording team for this album.
"Calm Before The Storm" was released by Maple Leaf Records, an independent label from Augsburg, Germany. Less-known as the label is, it has released a couple of albums in the past decades, including some welcome hard/melodic rock artists like Dutch Lifeforce, Italian The Hades Band, German Allying Cry, German Diary etc. Of course Lovering's "Calm Before The Storm" was the most impressive one for me on this label. Most albums released by German Maple Leaf Records came out around the late 1990s and the early 2000s.
Interestingly, there was no drum player listed in Lovering's personnel. The bassist also worked on rhythmn programming, who might act as the role on drums as well. Simple as the line-up was in this album, Lovering's music is filled with quality creations and arrangements.
Here the song "The Love In Your Eyes" is my favourite from the album. Interestingly, when the solo kicks in, it reminds me of the solo from Richard Marx's "Angelia (1989)". Does anybody heard the similarity? That is amazing to see the music intercommunities between two brilliant gems.
Musically, Lovering performed decent pure aor with all the songs written/co-written and produced by Brian Lovering. The opening track "One More Lie" is filled with fantastic vibe like dreamland by magic keys. "I'll Give Her My Love" and "Fading Memory" are the ballads featuring resonant sound field. "You'll Win My Love" is like a passionate ditty. "Don't Turn Away" sounds more like solid aor featuring compacted guitars with keyboards gleaming on, powerful beats and fantastic solos. "Nowhere To Run" is filled with 1980s vibe, my second favourite from the album.
For whoever is fond of Lovering's "Calm Before The Storm", here are another Canadian gems that I want to mention as the suggested artists with their underrated but amazing albums which came out during the same periods of the late 1990s, featuring the similar musical taste: Agent's "Evidence (1998)" and Stranded's "Long Way To Heaven (1999)".
