18:35 - Point 3: CHRISTIAN SABBATH ON THE LORD'S DAY
The Hebrew word "shabbath" which is translated as "Sabbath" means repose or cessation from work, not "seventh". It is the cessation from work that makes a day Sabbath; it has even been observed on different days other than the seventh (Leviticus 23:39).
Moreover, Sabbaths in the Scripture have been of different durations, such as one day as it is in Exodus 16:23-29, two days in Leviticus 23:6-8, one year in Leviticus 25:4, seventy years in 2 Chronicles 36:21 and for eternity in Hebrews 4:9, 10. The Christian
Sabbath is the first day of the week which the early believers called the "Lord's Day". "I was in the Spirit on the Lord's day, and heard behind me a great voice, as of a trumpet" (Revelation 1:10).
Most landmark events in the New Testament church were delivered on the first day of the week. These include: one, the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ (John 20:1). As the first creation by God was commemorated by the seventh day Sabbath, so the new creation in Christ was commemorated on the first day Sabbath.
Two, Christ met with His disciples on the next two Lord's days (John Three, the Holy Spirit was given on the first day of the week (Acts 2:1). Four, the early disciples met on the first day of the week to break bread in remembrance of the Lord's death and resurrection. Five, the first day of the week was appointed by God for Christians to set funds aside for God's work (1 Corinthians 16:2). From Christ's
teaching, the prohibition of work on the Lord's Day does not apply to the service of God, deeds of
necessity or mercy. The ritualistic ceremonial observance of the Sabbath which some Jews sought to introduce into the early Church was not commanded for the New Testament believers. "Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days" (Colossians 2:16).
Christians do not earn salvation by keeping the Lord's Day. Rather, it is a day of devotion to the One who gave Himself for us. The resurrection of Christ marks new beginning for mankind, and the Lord's Day, the first day of the week is a symbol of the new beginning.
