The series The Gangster Chronicles: An American Story (1981) starred Michael Nouri as Charlie "Lucky" Luciano, Joe Penny as Benny 'Bugsy' Siegel, and Brian Benben as Michael Lasker (the name given to the Meyer Lansky-based-character due to legal reasons).
Luciano (the organizer), Siegel (the muscle), and Lasker (the brains) were childhood
friends who joined forces during the prohibition era and became major bootleggers. As the series dramatizes their rise to power, it contrasts their personal lives: Luciano cultivated a mistress; Siegel becomes a womanizer; Lasker, a devoted family man. As with the Godfather movies, their personal lives were also explored. The Gangster Chronicles combined action and drama with a portrait of the crime figures as real people, not just two-dimensional caricatures or miscreants-but products of their environment. The show/series presents a revealing, dramatic look at the roots of certain aspects of American history with accuracy. It is based on ten years of research by Emmy-winning writer Richard Alan Simmons.
"It's easy to put labels on someone like this, but for me as an actor, I had to find out what made (Luciano) tick. I tried to see him as a human being who reacted in a negative way to different social, economic and family influences in his life. I had to understand the times he grew up in. He saw a lot of poverty and injustice as a kid on New York's Lower Eastside and he lashed out at it in later years." -Michael Nouri
Whether it was desirable or not, the assimilation of Sicilians with non-Sicilians occurred freely in the melting pot of America. An example of this trend was Al Capone, a non-Sicilian who was accepted into our world but who was never representative of our Tradition. Capone originally was from Brooklyn. He had gone to Chicago in the 1920s at the invitation of his close Neapolitan friend Johnny Torrio. (A Man of Honor: The Autobiography of Joseph Bonnano)
Written by Emmy Award-winner Richard Alan Simmons, "The Gangster Chronicles" is the result of countless hours of original research, with the assistance of Ralph Salerno, the world's leading authority on organized crime to the present day. According to Simmons and Salerno, the series will not glorify crime, but rather will "expose the sociological roots of crime and deal with human beings for whatever reasons became what they were - and the relationships between the police, politicians, and criminals - the trial that spawned the so-called organized crime.
