The Moderna and Pfizer vaccines both use what's called a Messenger RNA also called mRNA vaccines.

Here's how it works, the CDC says to trigger an immune response, the mRNA vaccine gives instructions for our cells to make a harmless piece of what's called the "spike protein" which is found on the surface of the virus that causes COVID-19.

"In my mind it's like putting a USB in a computer and the computer sees there's a program there and it runs it, Norton Healthcare Infectious Disease Specialist, Dr. Paul Schulz, said.

Viral Vector is the vaccine technology that Janssen will use -- the company that owns Johnson & Johnson.

When injected this one will not use the virus that causes COVID-19... instead a different harmless virus will enter a cell in our body and then use it to produce a harmless piece of virus that causes COVID-19, according to the CDC.
