Spinal Fusion is the best surgery and it is the hallmark of spinal surgery, it can give best prognosis for a patient with lower back pan with one disc involvement with instability, spinal fusion gives very good immediate results but over the years there is always a chance the adjacent levels, one level upper and one level lower. These discs can get degenerated ad that can result in adjacent level degeneration. That symptoms can appear, so it only about 8 to 10% of the cases. Rest of the cases there will not be any problem but if you do after spinal surgery, do proper exercises, and care for your back, not to do any stressful work or too much or weight lifting, then probably we can reduce the adjacent level degeneration. Nowadays there are implants available which allows some amount of movement at the fused segment or the stabilized segments so that also decreases the adjacent level degeneration.
