Trisagion ത്രൈ ശുദ്ധ കീർത്തനം / ദൈവമേ നീ പരിശുദ്ധന് – is a triple invocation : Holy, Holy, Holy …… marks the beginning of every prayer of the Holy Church.
Coptic, Syriac, Armenian and Malankara tradition follows that St. Ignatios Noorono (there are scholars who consider him as a disciple of St. Peter, St. John and there are others who consider him as a disciple of St. Paul) had a vision (revelation) about the Angelic chorus at the time of crucifixion and burial of our Lord. Hosts of Angels and Arch Angels sang the Trisagion when our Lord’s body was taken for entombment by Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus.
Trisagion was considered as a reply to those who mocked our Lord - The Angels exalted, “Holy art Thou O God.” When His Body was brought down from the Cross - The Angels exalted, “Holy art Thou O Almighty.” When the people mocked Him saying that He could not save himself from death, then - The Angels proclaimed, “Holy art Thou O Immortal One.” Witnessing all these, Nicodemus and Joseph of Arimathea joined the angelic chorus and replied by glorified Him – “Thou wast crucified for us Have Mercy Upon Us”.
Greek tradition recounts that during the reign of Theodosius II (408-450), the city of Constantinople was evacuated as it was shaken by a series of violent earthquakes. As soon as the earth starts shaking the people used to cry out Kyrie eleison ('Lord, have mercy'). Whilst the people, the emperor and the Patriarch Proclus of Constantinople were praying for heavenly assistance, a child was suddenly lifted up into midair by an unseen force, and was carried up to such a height that he was no longer visible to human eyes. The child was then seen to descend again to the earth, and in a loud voice he exhorted the people to pray : 'Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal'. All the people began to sing the Trisagion and added the refrain Kyrie eleison to it and the earth quake stopped.
What you are hearing is a humble effort to chant the Trisagion, that will hopefully lift our minds and hearts to a realm of deified transcendence to unite with the Absolute Being.
