The North Coast 500 is described as Scotland's answer to Route 66. It's a scenic route of just over 500 miles (800km) following the coast around the far north of mainland Scotland, starting and finishing at Inverness Castle.
The A838 runs from the centre of the Scottish Highlands to the far north west of the island of Great Britain, a distance of 83 miles (134km), much of which is only a single track road with passing places. It begins on the A836 to the north of Lairg and runs north-west to the A894 junction at Laxford Bridge - it then heads north-north-east to Durness on the north coast. After a significant diversion to avoid Loch Eriboll, a sea loch - it heads east to meet the A836 again at Tongue, where it terminates.
This video shows a short journey along the A838, from the eastern end of the road at the A836 junction into Tongue village.
