Sony a6000 - 2 Years Later

Our Sony a6000 ’s are still going strong! That’s right. You heard that right. We have two of them!
Why would I be discussing a two year old camera, and for the love of god, why would I still be recommending it?
Let me just say that we love these mirrorless cameras, because they give all the great quality of a much bigger, bulkier, and heavier DSLR.
In this video, I’m going to discuss our Sony a6000
long term usage
the pros and the cons
why you should really be considering it if you are looking for a great quality, compact travel camera.
Even though it is two years old. We still like the Sony a6000 2 years later enough to recommend it.
So, in 2014, Sony released the a6000, a mirrorless camera with incredible specs in features in a moderately low cost package.
Now, 2 years later, Sony offers the a6500, a 4k capable, sensor stabilized camera, with dynamic range that is eye-poppingly good.
Why would you want an a6000 then? Is it worth picking up nowadays, for the new street price of about $500?
The answer, to me, is an absolute yes. If, you take into account a few short comings. But for about a third the price of the a6500, those few short comings are easy to overlook.
Alright, here are the pros.
First, it has really good autofocus and image stabilization on its native E-mount lenses.
Second, the Dynamic range is exceptional, bringing back exceptionally sharp images.
Third, The cameras oled viewfinder, while not amazingly sharp, is very, very good.
Fourth, the rear LED screen articulates. But, if you are into vlogging, the screen does not flip all the way out or up so that you can see yourself.
Fifth, the camera offers programmable face-detection. It’s pretty amazing stuff.
Another feature I like, is the ability, with an inexpensive adapter, to use any lenses you might already own from a different camera line.
As an example. One of my favorite lenses is the Sigma Art Series 30mm with 1.4 aperture.
This is such a great lens, and with the addition of a Viltrox Mount adapter, I can use this lens that was made for Canon cameras.
Though admittedly, if you only use autofocus you may be disappointed as it is very slow.
Is that a pro? I think it is.
Now, the cons.
First, the menu system on the camera was a bit clunky. It takes awhile to figure out where everything is.
Second, there is no touch screen, a real bummer.
Third, if you are into making videos there is no audio input jack for attaining better sound.
Lastly, battery life is really, really short. We each carry three batteries with us during the day.
Given its current low price, this is a steal, and I definitely recommend it, if you’re ok with the minor drawbacks I shared.
In my mind, if you are looking for a high quality mirrorless camera at a killer low price, this is the camera for you.
After all this, what are your thoughts on the a6000? Do you have one? Is your assessment the same?
