It’s the medical term for low hemoglobin. “Hemoglobin is the molecule in the red blood cell that carries oxygen throughout the body.” Lee Health Medical Oncologist and Hematologist Dr. Leandro Moraes said anemia cases can range from mild to severe. “Typically, patients will start to exhibit symptoms such as fatigue, shortness of breath, particularly with exertion, they may nap more than usual, pale skin, pale nails.”
“One of the most common causes of anemia typically tends to be iron deficiency particularly in younger patients.” While some meats are high in iron, Dr. Moraes said if you are losing more than you’re replacing it will lead to a deficit over time. “Most of the time it’s not necessarily diet, most people’s ability to absorb is pretty good. It’s usually due to sort of a balance issue.”
Anemia can be treated by a concentrated iron pill that patients take daily. “Usually to replace the iron levels that may take a couple of months, but most patients start to see relief from symptoms in a few weeks,” said Dr. Moraes. Your primary care physician will be able to catch if something is wrong when you go in for your yearly checkup.
