(1 Jan 2022) Londoners cheered from the streets as England marked the start of the New Year with celebrations at The Shard on Friday night.
From the Southwark Bridge near the iconic Shard building the odd firework display could be seen but activity appeared to be very limited compared to the usual big celebrations London hosts to usher in the start of the year.
A countdown to the New Year was lit up on the top of the Shard while those gathered were also treated to a light display on the building.
Britain like many countries around the world was set to scale back New Year celebrations following a large rise in coronavirus infections.
While no extra restrictions have been put in place in England, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson urged those celebrating to be cautious and take a COVID test.
The U.K. reported 189,846 new cases on Friday, a new record for daily infections.
