Snakes have a fascinating way of keeping themselves healthy and fit—by shedding their skin. They do this for two main reasons. First, when a snake eats, its body expands, but its skin doesn't stretch with it, so the snake needs to shed it to accommodate its new size. Second, as snakes slither across the ground and up trees in search of food, they pick up dirt, bacteria, and even parasites, which can lead to infections. To protect themselves, snakes grow a fresh layer of skin underneath the old one about six times a year. When it's time to shed, a special fluid forms between the two layers, making it easier for the snake to slip out of the old skin. The process starts with the snake rubbing its nose against a rough surface, like a rock, to create a tear in the old skin, and then it slithers out, leaving the old skin behind.
