A Russian court sentenced Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny to three and a half years in jail on Tuesday after ruling he had violated the terms of his parole, but said that his prison term would be shortened to two years and eight months for the time he had already served under house arrest.
As the court deliberated his jail sentence, at least 235 of Navalny's supporters were detained by Russian police, the OVD-Info protest monitoring group said.
"The only possible opinion here is that this trial is a sham, like many other trials in Russia. Everything that is going on is a full-blown delusion, have nothing to do with justice," One supporter said outside the Moscow court.
Navalny, one of President Vladimir Putin's most prominent critics, was arrested at the Russian border on Jan. 17 after returning from Germany where he had been recovering from being poisoned with a military-grade nerve agent.
