Dr. Kalemkerian completed medical school and internal medicine residency at Northwestern University in Chicago, followed by one year as chief medical resident. He then completed a clinical and research fellowship in Medical Oncology at the Johns Hopkins Oncology Center in Baltimore. From 1993-1999, he was a physician-scientist in the Lung Cancer Program at the Karmanos Cancer Institute at Wayne State University in Detroit, where his research focused on the development of experimental therapy for lung cancer. Since coming to the University of Michigan in 1999, Dr. Kalemkerian has continued to care for patients with lung cancer and related diseases, direct the Multidisciplinary Lung Cancer Clinic, and perform research with a focus on experimental treatments for lung cancer. He has been the Principal Investigator for numerous clinical trials based on laboratory research and continues to develop novel therapies for patients with lung cancer along with his team of investigators in a variety of disciplines at the University of Michigan. The ultimate goal of his clinical and research work is to improve the lives of people with thoracic malignancies. In addition to his clinical and research activities, Dr. Kalemkerian is the Chair of the Small Cell Lung Cancer Guidelines Panel of the National Cancer Center Network and has been consistently recognized by his peers through selection to Best Doctors in America. He has served on numerous grant review committees, Editorial Boards of professional journals, and committees for the American Society of Clinical Oncology. He has authored over 50 original research publications and numerous review articles, editorials, and book chapters.
