What's the difference between Scottish English, Scots, and Scottish Gaelic?
Because people don't realize that Scots and Scottish English form a continuum, they think it has to be one or the other. It doesn't! Both exist! They're two extremes on a scale.
People have very strong opinions bout whether this continuum is "actually" English or "actually" its own language. It's both!
If you use the phrase "Scottish English" though, some people think that implies that Scots isn't a real language, and get understandably upset about it!
