Raja Raja Radhithe | Niroshta Raga | Muthiah Bhagavatar | Suresh Kadandale | Sharath Haleyangadi.
Niroshta is a unique raga, invented by the Late genius Harikesanallur Muthiah Bhagavathar.
It is a janya of 29th mela, Dheera Shankarabaranam.
The specialty of this raga is that it does not have madhyamam and panchamam.
The other uniqueness of this raga is that while singing this raga, the upper and lower lips never meet. The raga name is derived from this specialty.(Nir=without, and Oshta= lips).
Muthiah Bhagavathar's krithi, "RAja raja radhithe, Nadha nidhe Sharadhe" has been masterfully sung by the great TNS.
Niroshta is a relatively new age ragam, with a pentatonic scale. What is unique though, it doesn’t have either panchamam or madhyamam in it. How does this matter? It does, because Pa and Ma are the only swaras that are pronounced with a bilabial sound (phonetically, sound formed by closure of the lips). If you cannot smack your lips in between your singing for a long time, you might end up drooling.
Even the name of the raga roughly means “without the lips” and it follows the parent raga Sankarabharanam of the 29th melakartha. Hence the scale of Niroshta is:
Aarohanam – S R2 G3 D2 N3 S
Avarohanam – S N3 D2 G3 R2 S
Carnatic Compositions
Harikesanallur Muthiah Bagavathar invented the ragam Niroshta and also composed a song in it that begins, Raja raja radhithe. The speciality of the song is, even its lyrics with no bilabial syllable in it (i.e) udhadugal ottadhu; and it has a crisp chittaswaram to add to the beauty of the composition which obviously don’t have Ma and Pa. It is said that he composed this song when the Mysore Maharaja was unwell and had swollen lips!
“The word sin or papa comes from the first sound of the pa-group repeated twice. The sounds in the pa-group are called papa-pankti and avoiding these sounds is Niroshta. Avoiding papa-pankti is indicative of reminding ourselves that we are trying to avoid the papa and punya for the good of our extended self.”
