Demand for children’s books that celebrate diversity has exploded during the Black Lives Movement, to the delight of Annahita de la Mare, the Swiss-based author of an adventure series about three girls of mixed race. Publishers are finally realizing that stories dominated by white boys and girls in stereotypical roles are depriving the industry as well as society of potential, she says. In an interview with Hannah Wise, she discusses why children need to encounter diverse characters in literature, especially in their early years as they begin to develop a view of themselves and their world.
