Residents in villages surrounding the port city of Kherson, Ukraine, cheered and gave flowers to Ukrainian servicemen on Friday and Saturday as they arrived following the withdrawal of Russian forces from one of the key cities previously captured in the war.
"My dear saviours," Nataliia Porkhun, a resident of Klapaya, said to two soldiers who had driven through her neighbourhood as she gave them flowers. "Maybe my children will be back, I haven't seen them for nine months."
The withdrawal was not only celebrated with tears and gifts in the city either, with residents cheering and waving Ukrainian flags in Odesa, including some Kherson evacuees who fled earlier in the war.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the military had established control in more than 60 settlements, and almost 2,000 explosive items had already been removed from the area. But he said Russian forces, prior to leaving Kherson, destroyed critical infrastructure including the water supply and electricity.
