Six years ago world leaders agreed to keep temperatures from rising past two degrees celsius and as close as possible to 1.5C above pre-industrial times. This is because rising temperatures can lead to more extreme weather events, such as melting polar ice, heatwaves, floods and droughts.
At COP26 in Glasgow, countries are being asked how they plan to keep to this commitment. But why exactly is 1.5 such an important number when it comes to climate change?
