Top 5 eBay Seller Scams & How to Avoid Them

1 - Missing information: A DVD listing that doesn’t mention the DVD region, meaning that you might not actually be able to play it. Or not mentioning that a camera doesn’t come with a lens or memory card, meaning you can’t use it. Or not listing that a phone is locked to certain network. Even if a seller sticks “sold as seen” at the bottom of their listing, not including important information is bad as leaving misleading information. To get around this, just be very critical as a buyer and make no assumptions about what you’re buying - if in doubt, ask the seller a question.
2 misleading information. look out for jargon like solid gold covered instead of just solid gold or gold plated, as new in the title which is obviously just used when you read the description, or even NEW, meaning used. Another favourite is for sellers to say: Might be a faboget egg but not sure as not an expert so buy at your own risk - it’s not a $2 faboget egg. You might even find pictures which show one item and then the item description describes something else. You just have to be very careful when shopping on eBay - make the seller doesn’t have loads of feedback from buyers saying they were ripped off. Also, it’s a good idea to keep in mind the motto if it looks too good to be true then it probably is.
3 - The postage scam.You find a really cheap price for that thing want, but the postage cost is really high. Maybe the total price is still pretty good, so you buy it. This might sound ok, but if the item is broken and you need to return it, the seller could refuse to refund the postage cost, leaving you significantly out of pocket! Look for items with free delivery to avoid this scam.
4 - Hidden costs: You buy an item but it doesn’t include another accessory that you need to use it. If you’re buying an item from another country, remember you may well have import duty and VAT to pay. it’s up to you as the buyer to know the fees for your country, it’s not the responsibility of the seller. But some sellers will pose as being in your country when in fact they’re based in China - meaning you could get fees you weren’t expecting and you may wait weeks for your item to arrive. Always check a sellers feedback to see if people are consistently saying that the item is actually shipped from another country.
5- The photograph scam. A brand new item for only £100! You buy it but you receive a photograph of an iPhone. You complain to the seller but they claim the listing makes it clear you were buying a picture, not the real thing. If a price is too good to be true, it usually is. Read all the text in an item description to make sure they don’t say you’re buying a photo not the real item.
