HPV is Human Papillomavirus is a sexually transmitted infection.
Dr. Scott Rhodes, researcher in the Division of Public Health Sciences at Wake Forest School of Medicine, says that in the U.S., it is estimated that 50 percent of sexually active adults become infected at some point in their lives.
According to Dr. Rhodes, the HPV vaccine can greatly reduce the chance of infection with the viruses that are associated with cervical cancer.
There is a variety of HPV strains. The vaccines target those that are most associated with cervical cancer.
Dr. Rhodes says vaccination is safe. There are several vaccines: one for men and boys, two for women.
