Il documentario descrive i dettagli del progetto “MPAs and endangered sharks in the Mediterranean: a pilot project in the Pelagie Islands MPA” portato avanti dal Laboratorio di Ecologia Marina e Conservazione della Natura (DISTEM, Università degli studi di Palermo).
Il progetto è stato selezionato nell'ambito del bando 2019 per small projects di MedPAN ed è finanziato da French Facility for Global Environment e Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation.
Lampione, un'isola remota nello stretto di Sicilia. Un posto dimenticato dal tempo. Qui, nell'Area Marina Protetta delle Isole Pelagie, nei mesi di luglio e settembre si verifica una aggregazione di squali grigi. Cosa li porta qui? e dove sono diretti? Alcuni ricercatori del laboratorio di ecologia e conservazione 'della natura della Università di Palermo sono andati sull'isola per capire il comportamento degli squali grigi in Mediterraneo e per sviluppare strategie di gestione e conservazione per proteggere questa specie di squalo a rischio di estinzione.

Trailer of the documentary by Riccardo Cingillo on the sandbar shark seasonal aggragations in Lampione Island. The doc shows the details of the project “MPAs and endangered sharks in the Mediterranean: a pilot project in the Pelagie Islands MPA” lead by the Marine Ecology and Conservation laboratory (DISTEM, University of Palermo, Italy).
This project is funded by the French Facility for Global Environment and Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation. The project was selected in the framework of the MedPAN Regular Call for Small Projects.
Lampione, a remote island in the Strait of Sicily, a place forgotten over time, here in this Pelagie Island Marine Protected Area, in the months of July to September an aggregation of sandbar sharks passes by. What brings them here? Where are they going? Some researchers came to the island to understand the behaviour of sandbar sharks in the Mediterranean Sea and to develop management and conservation strategies to protect this shark species which is in danger of extinction.
