Next up, here are the most important findings that you'll learn during this video:
✅ I just wanted to update how my training is going at the end of February 2022. I'll also give you a rowing trial in this video. Every month from now on, I'll give you an update and review my progress so far
✅ The video mistakenly says that I published the previous indoor rowing video a month ago, but due to publication issues on YouTube, that video was only released 5 days ago or so. Apologies for the minor mistake!
✅ I'm currently weighing 102.5 - 102.7 kilograms - no big changes there. I've been training really well the past month. February 2022 was actually my first proper month of training in terms of consistency and a solid training program. I've also pulled a 250-kilogram deadlift for 3 repetitions recently, so I'm good in the strength department. My nervous system was a bit burned out because I couldn't lock out 260 kilograms in the next week. Squats have been feeling really heavy at 160 kilograms though.
✅ My sleep has been shocking though, it has been one of the worst months ever so far - due to me becoming a father for a second time now. I'm only getting 5-6 hours a night of broken sleep currently. My 3-year-old is also getting up a lot during the night - I just backed off on the training load a bit because of that reason
✅ I've been starting to get used to the Polar Vantage V2 device which I'm wearing on my wrist. The watch really monitors your recovery on different exercises such as jumps. On a good day I can jump 45 centimeters while on bad days I can only reach 37 or 38 centimeters
✅ My goal in this video is to break my Personal Best (PB), hopefully, a sub 1:20 minute time. Secondly, I want to break the New Zealand age-group goal, but the problem is that I'll only be in that age group next year, not this one. In the end, I also want to break the New Zealand open 500m record, if possible, which is located at 1:14 minute
✅ For today's indoor rowing goal PB, I don't really have a strategy. I'll come out very strong and I'll probably crash and burn at 100 or 200 meters. My goal is to reach 685 Watts - I'm using Watts because they're a lot more accurate for measuring rowing performance
✅ The outcome? I scored 1:19.5 minutes, so I accomplished my goal of a sub 1:20 minute 500m. The first 100 meters I was averaging around 850 Watts while later on, those numbers dropped off to sub-600 Watts between 400 and 500 meters. My heart rate was located at 174 beats per minute, on average, with a maximum of 181
✅ The only downside is that I didn't quite reach the 1,000 Watts at the start of the session
✅ Nevertheless, I've seen improvements in my performance in January. I was fasting back then and hence, I probably didn't perform as well as I could have. Back then, I was also very fatigued afterwards. I just felt the way I felt after a 2,000-meter race in the past, but this time, just on a 500-meter sprint
✅ My conclusion is that my fitness has improved a lot since January, as does my recovery - so I'm happy. If you've got more experience than I do in rowing or faster times, make sure to give me feedback by leaving a comment if you wish. I'm always happy to learn from others!
