STORYLINE:
Japan's Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi held talks on Saturday with his South Korean counterpart Park Jin at the G7 summit in Hiroshima.
Ties between Japan and South Korea have rapidly thawed in recent months, largely because of their shared sense of urgency over escalating regional security threats.
During the talks, Hayashi thanked Jin for South Korea's assistance in evacuating Japanese nationals from Sudan during the recent conflict and pledged to "make Japan-Korea cooperation even more solid."
Jin responded by mentioning Sunday's planned visit by South Korean president Yoon to the Hiroshima Memorial to Korean victims of the atomic bomb for the first time.
"I think it will contribute to establishing future-oriented partnership between South Korea and Japan," he added.
