(7 Aug 2019) Before it was no more eating or drinking, now it's also no more sitting on the famous Spanish Steps in Rome.
Implementing an ordinance that came into effect in July, police patrols started telling tourists off early in August, informing them about the sitting ban in one of the most iconic locations in Rome.
Tourists enjoying a short rest on the world famous steps were told on Thursday to stand up, or they would be fined up to 400 euros, since in the eternal City it is forbidden to sit on monuments.
A local city hall June 6 ordinance, which came into effect in July, says that it is now forbidden to sit, eat or drink on the Spanish Steps, considered a monument and listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
The ordinance also applies to other protected places like the Trevi Fountain.
The city says it has been enforcing all parts of the ordinance at the Spanish Steps since it went into effect a month ago, but it wasn't until Tuesday that patrols from the city's police were seen telling people not to sit down on the steps.
