Today the Armenian Apostolic Church celebrates the Divine Liturgy on the the occasion of the Third Sunday after the Major Feast of the Transfiguration of our Lord Jesus Christ. Today also marks the Eve of the Fast of the Assumption of the Holy Virgin Mother of God.
_______
According to the Gospel, Christ appeared with resplendent countenance to three of his Apostles, Peter, John, and James, on Mount Tabor. For this reason, this feast is also commemorated as the Feast of Luminous Metamorphosis (Baydzaragerbutiun).
Evangelists relate that at that moment Moses and Elijah appeared, talking to Jesus. Church doctors take this splendid event as a vivid symbol of the final transfiguration and resplendence of mankind. As Christ’s disciples did in their time, nowadays also the Church admires the glory of Christ through the feast of Transfiguration, maintaining that His faithful servants will share his glory, transfigure in the kingdom of heaven, and forever admire the ineffable light radiating from the Holy Trinity.
The Armenian Church celebrates the feast of Transfiguration on the seventh Sunday following Pentecost. It is one of five major feasts. The feast is also called “Vartavar” (Festival of Roses) after the old pagan feast, which it replaced. On this day some Armenians adorn themselves with roses, set doves loose, and sprinkle water on each other, all remnants of the pagan feast.
